A Blog about Graphic novels (Research I think so!)

Once or twice on the Blog Ive mentioned that Ive always wanted to make a Graphic Novel. The Idea for this was Sparked of from my Mums friends Husband called Ken who asked me one Christmas or  New year "So Tom When are you going to get these Comics together" something like that anyway.

So for those of you who don't Know.......
What is a Graphic Novel?
From what I already a Graphic Novel is a Collection of Comic strips from Magazines or well "Comics" which are put together in the form of a Big hard back Book with Forward Interviews with the writers or Illustrators of the actual Comics and occasionally some development work in the last few pages of the Book. But that not always the case back in Summer 2011 I stumbled across a Graphic novel called A.L.I.E.E.E.N (Archive of Lost Issues and Earthly Editions  of Extraterrestrial Novelties) In a second hand bookshop in Whitby.
alieeen cover
The book was created by French writer and illustrator "Lewis Trondheim". A.L.I.E.E.E.N is aimed for Children (from an other planet so basically Alien Children) But there some quite graphic scenes which I think are made for a Mature audience take this Scene for example where a Small Yellow chap/chapette is taking his Dog for a walk and then his/her dog gauges its eyes out by walking In to some thorns!
Im sorry but If I was a Kid and I was reading this book Id probably be traumatised by these Images. Im starting to sound a bit like an Upper class parent now (which god knows Ill probably end up like one). If you think thats bad later on In the book the little dog creature starts to create a "trail" of his own Faeces Eww. So Ideally Graphic Novels are really Aimed for Teenagers or a Much Adult audience and me (I like to read books with Pictures see if I read normal books with out Pictures then occasionally I get bored or lost in a sea of words). The Watchmen is a Good example of a Graphic Novel aimed for a Mature audience although Ive never actually had a good look at It all the way through and Ive not even seen the Film all the way through :/

Graphic Novels which I am Inspired By
The First actual Graphic Novel I owned was a Collaboration of Tom and Jerry comics which I got after losing a Tooth as a Kid. Asides from having pictures of Tom and Jerry in Gaudy 90s shell suits and other 90s fashions there are some good Stories including one there Tom and Jerry and Jerrys nephew (Tuffy was It!?) are fighting over the Television remote, A story where Tom Uses a Robot cat to chase Jerry and a nice one where Jerry tries to steal a Cheese burger from Toms master but they end up sharing the Cheese burger which I really Liked as Kid So then again not all Graphic novels are aimed for Teenagers there aimed for little kiddie winks aswell.

Dragon-ball Is another Graphic novel I was (and still am) Inspired by. The graphics and Visuals seem Innocent enough but there still some adult elements such as the Fact in one story the main character "Goku" Punches a hole through a Bad guys head and you see his willy a couple of times. And there's also Master Roshi who is a bit of a pervert and Is always getting Goku to go off and find him a Girlfriend (Master Roshi lives in a house on a desert Island see)
But bare in Mind Dragon ball is written (and illustrated) by a Japanese person (Akira Toriyama) so the Humour is going to be different to us western folk, Ok the Blogs going great I think. Another Graphic novel from the Far East Im inspired by Is Gon or Gon the Little Dinosaur as I like to call him.
The Thing thats makes Gon so Unique is that there's no words or speech bubbles Its just Pictures and damn good pictures might I just add. The Next Graphic Novel I want to talk about is one I got for Christmas well I got 2 Graphic novels but I mainly want to talk about "The Death Ray".

The Death Ray tells the story of Andy a kid who get super strength from the nicotine is Cigarettes and is armed with a Death-ray which his father made before he died Its does get a bit depressing later on.
The Death-Ray started out in David Clowes own comic "Eightball" back in Summer of 2004 It was then published by "Drawn & Quarterly" as a hard cover graphic novel in October 2011 which I like because It feels like one of those Yearly Annuals I used to get as a Kid

If given a chance to Make a Graphic Novel what would It be about
Well I guess If did my own Graphic novel It would be about my original character "Tom-Man" going on adventures with his friends and maybe throw in some puzzles at the back.
I want to try and aim Tom-Man at a sort of Family audience the Tom-Man Comics I did in 2010 were a tad violent and has abit of swearing In it aswell I might show you them one day. Another reason I want to drift Tom-Man towards the Family audience is because my Family like Tom-Man and so do my friends, in fact most of the Characters (minus the Villains) of Tom-Man are based on People I know. I have to decide now whether or not Tom-Man should start life in an already existing Comic publisher e.g 2000AD or DC Thomson. Or Find a Publisher and just make a graphic novel.

I think the next blog I will do will be research into publishers See you then!

What tom got up to this week

Look at this horrible Photo of me at Warehouse :/

Alright lets start with Monday the 6th of February 2012
I was a Bit late today because of the fact I had Tooth ache and I had to pay a visit to the dentist. Turned out that my Wisdom teeth are coming through and are pushing all my other teeth out the way which is causing me pain. Anyways From what I remember I worked on some shots which Judd (One D in Jud) wanted me to work on a bit more and those shots were Shot 5 and 6.

Tuesday the 7th of February 2012
I was feeling anti social today so I hid away in animation alley I also showed Jud those shots I was talking about previously. I also worked on the Final shot of scene 2. I also coloured In a Pic of Hipster Tom-Man.
Wednesday the 8th of February 2012
From what I recall I worked on some shots for Scene 3 there's only 3 shots to worry about so Ill work on them abit more this up coming week.

Thursday the 9th of February 2012
Other than My aunty Angela coming round to visit, I stayed in class today Up until 2:30 I think to worked on shot 7. I also found out my grades from last semiester.

For the Animatic I got 65% out of 70%
And for the Futures project book I got 67% out of 70% (If that makes sense)

So thats a Second in animation Thats great! Its what I hoped for anyway I told my family and they were very proud of me.

Friday the 10th of February 2012
I met the first of Many guest speakers "Roger Law" the Evil genius behind 80s Political satire puppet show "Spitting Image" below is a Video of Roger law from 2010 talking about some work he was doing for the Tate.
In fact I recognised that Image of of that political debate election thingy....It appeared on the Guide magazine didn't It I dont know why I am asking you.

Asides from meeting Roger Law I coloured in another Comic for some reason  guess they calm me down.

Saturday the 11th of February 2012
Didn't really do much work today In fact I hardly did any thing except go Southport with my aunt and the rest of my family. I bought some Hair Gel and an Animation Book by Astroboy creator Osama Tezuka. I also began typing up 260 words about Roger Law.

Sunday the 12th of October February 2012
If it was October I wouldn't be doing this Blog well I might carry on with it Who knows! Angela leaves today :( but I may see her again before July (Im intent on going to Cardiff in July see) I dont know what Im going to do Today Im sure Ill think of something I always do!

I leave you now with 2 Videos like always! Lets see what can I leave with you with ummm.
Oh yeah a Clip of Mr. DNA From Jurassic Park I watched that quite abit during this week I dont know why like.....
Another video I found was of Angry man Charlie Brooker paying tribute to Stop frame animator Oliver Postgate the man Behind beloved animations such as the Clangers and Bagpuss. By the way this tribute was first shown on the 16th of December 2008 on BBC 4.

Sunday 5 February 2012

Thursday the 2nd of February 2012
Cant really remember a whole lot about Thursday I do recall going home early because I got abit down! THATS A TERRIBLE EXCUSE BOY!

Friday the 3rd of February 2012
Took a break from my 3 minute Film and Coloured In a short Tom-Man Comic instead.
I also went to see a New Film "Chronicle" today aswell with some friends. Chronicle Tells the tale of these 3 lads Andrew, Matt and Steve who all find a Hole in the ground that leads them to a Glowing Crystal that gives the 3 Boys Telekinesis (the ability to move an manipulate objects with your mind) It was pretty good film Id watch It again maybe. Ohh here is the Trailer.
Saturday the 4th of February 2012
I worked on shot 8 scene 3 :D Ho yess! uh Still needs a bit of animating doing with it. I also went out to warehouse with my friend Dan and his Friend Tom Snape who I haven't seen physically in 6 Months (US TOMS WE GOTTA STICK TOGETHER!) We also met some people Tom knew (I dont know how) One of them was a Bleach Blonde haired girl with Pale blue eyes [stop sounding creepy tom >:(] who Just turned 18 and Liked me because of my Sarcasm [Now I know why every one Finds me funny :D] Problem is I never got her name and I never saw her for the rest of the Night :(

Sunday the 5th of February 2012
Updated this Blog (although I think I should do It more often) And as I was my mothers birthday on Wednesday were going out as a Family for Sunday lunch I dont know where though Ill get back to you on that one. Im also gonna take a look at those Links Rona (the futures lady) sent me Last week here they are.

As you probably would have guessed by the Links I want to try and get into Illustration I know Its not exactly Animation But I really want to get my Comics out there Into the World. I can just Imagine my self Walking Into a Magazine outlet or Comic Shop and seeing Tom-Man on the Shelves and then me Saying "Look! Its in a Real Shop!".

I aspire to the Words of Kevin Clash (The man who created Elmo) who said in a Doumentry Film "Being Elmo" and he says

"If everybody else your age Is doing something very different to what your doing there's always going to be someone saying that you might not succeed and you might not make any money. All of those things would go away If you really focus on what makes you happy"

I really Aspire to those words In fact thats the most Inspiring thing Ive heard This week!

I leave you now with 2 videos and those are Vangelis "Memories of Green" which appeared in the 1981 film "Blade Runner"
And a pretty cool Made Up cartoon "SPACE STALLIONS" Which Is inspired by loads of Cartoons from the 80s :D I love the 80s me.
The one problem I have with this cartoon Is the Fact the Villain In it is Called "Destructo" Crap! The Villain in my Tom-Man comics is called Destructo :( I guess Ill to change his name to something different Any Ideas :/
